One of the first things that any real estate representative gets asked from a client is how safe a neighborhood is. From Green Bay to Oakville, real estate agents are bombarded with questions from buyers asking what kind of initiatives and programs are in place to keep a city safe. They also want to know what crime rates are like in certain areas, how safe schools are for their kids, and many other safety related queries. In some cases, the security of the neighborhood may even actually dictate the cost of housing.

There are lots of different reasons for determining how safe a neighborhood. If you own your own construction business, then you have a vested interested in keeping your goods safe. You want to live in an well lit neighborhood where people watch out for each other, and where crime rates are low.

Unfortunately, more and more big cities in the United States and elsewhere are having trouble when it comes to keeping neighborhoods safe and secure. Criminals are getting smarter and faster, in a time when government budgets are being stretched to the max just keeping up with basic services. There does not seem to be enough money to keep Riverside bankruptcy lawyers at bay, let alone provide extras to citizens.

However, home owners with houses in a zip in Green Bay can participate in a new initiative conceived by the city which may help everyone in the long run. Project Porchlight is the name of this groundbreaking program. Under it, residents across the city are being encouraged to leave their lights on from dawn until dusk, in order to keep crime rates down.

It might seem strange, but the fact is that a light is a major deterrent to criminals of all sorts. They don't like the idea of being seen, and if there is a lot of light in an area an Toronto caterer or Green Bay pizza delivery person stands a much lower chance of being robbed. That's true of all major crime.

You might wonder if this project is environmentally friendly, given that we are living in an era when everyone is being encouraged to use lights less, not more. However, the city is encouraging residents to use compact fluorescent lights as the means of illumination for this project. That means less energy used, which also means you won't have to check gold bullion prices and sell your stock at an opportune time in order to help protect your neighborhood.

Well lit neighborhoods are safe neighborhoods, no matter where you go in the world. Project Porchlight is an initiative that can help make even safe neighborhoods that much safer.
